Health Tip: Preparing for an Ultrasound

(HealthDay News) — Ultrasound imaging, also known as sonography, uses high-frequency sound waves to produce pictures of the inside of your body, says the University of California, San Francisco.

To prepare for an ultrasound, UCSF encourages patients to:

  1. Inform the provider if you have any allergies or need interpreting services.

  2. Leave valuables at home or in your hospital room.

  3. Listen to the doctor’s preparation instructions. You may be asked to drink water before the test.

  4. Be ready for a 30- to 60-minute exam.

  5. Ask the technologist any questions you may have.
