Health Tip: Risk Factors for Eating Disorders

(HealthDay News) — Eating disorders can develop among people with a combination of psychological, social and genetic factors, says the National Eating Disorders Collaboration.

The collaboration mentions these risk factors for eating disorders:

  1. Low self-esteem, or perfectionism.

  2. Overvaluing body image in defining self-worth.

  3. Stress, depression and trauma.

  4. Avoidance of social interaction.

  5. Involvement in a sport that emphasizes body shape.

  6. Troubled family or personal relationships.

  7. Teasing or bullying.
