(HealthDay News) — Most of the time, your urine should be a pale yellow color, says Harvard Medical School.

Though food or medication can change urine’s color, if your urine truly looks abnormal, you should always consult a doctor without delay.

Harvard Medical School mentions these typical causes of a change in urine color:

  1. Dark yellow typically indicates dehydration from lack of fluids.

  2. Red may indicate a problem with the urinary system.

  3. Brown or black urine may indicate a liver condition.

  4. Orange is often the result of taking certain medications.

  5. Milky-white urine color may indicate a urinary tract infection.

  6. Blue and green colors typically result from diagnostic test dyes.

  7. Purple urine may occur when someone has a urinary catheter.
